Doctor-reviewed answers about how the BioWell programme works, who qualifies, and what to expect.
BioWell provides a doctor-led metabolic management plan. Medication may form part of a plan where clinically indicated. The primary offering is structured medical care, assessment, planning, and supervised management.
No. BioWell builds a structured plan around assessment, nutrition, training guidance, and monitoring. Medication is introduced only where clinically appropriate and never as a starting point.
Programme length varies by patient, goals, and clinical response. BioWell treats it as a goal-based clinical process, not a fixed subscription.
No. BioWell operates on a medical model with consultation, prescription where appropriate, and ongoing clinical review, not a subscription or product sales model.
BioWell runs as a formal online medical practice with verified consultations, doctor-controlled prescriptions, and licensed pharmacy dispensing. The standard applied is identical to a physical medical practice.
BioWell does not force a single template. A clinician sets nutrition structure and exercise guidance based on individual assessment and goals.
Weight regain is possible if appetite control, habits, and metabolic drivers are not addressed. BioWell's programme is designed to build sustainable metabolic improvement, not temporary results.
Not always, but blood work may be required depending on history and risk profile. Existing recent results may be reviewed where available.
Follow-ups are structured with weekly feedback sessions on the platform and direct communication with the clinical team. Monthly consultations are standard, with additional reviews based on clinical need.
Yes. BioWell is built for online access and can support patients across South Africa, with delivery to most locations.
Most patients can be managed fully online. In-person assessment may be recommended if a clinician identifies a clinical need that cannot be adequately assessed remotely.
Patients qualify based on clinical screening and medical rationale, not demand or ability to pay. A formal assessment determines eligibility. Not all patients will qualify.
Exclusions and cautions are determined case-by-case. Common examples include pregnancy or breastfeeding, history of certain gastrointestinal conditions, personal or family history of thyroid cancer (MTC), or active psychiatric conditions. Patients may also be guided toward alternative treatment pathways where psychological or emotional factors are primary drivers.
A clinician reviews all current medication for interactions and risk. Treatment is adjusted or declined where clinical safety is a concern.
Prescription based metabolic therapy medicines mimic gut-hormone pathways that influence appetite regulation, satiety, and insulin sensitivity. They are not stimulants or appetite suppressants in the traditional sense.
Some prescription based metabolic therapy medicines are registered in South Africa for specific indications. BioWell's doctors can prescribe compounded medicines that are individually prepared by licensed compounding pharmacies, legally permitted under South African pharmacy practice law when prescribed by a registered practitioner.
Compounded medicines are not individually registered and tested as products for safety and efficacy, but are prepared by licensed pharmacies according to established pharmaceutical standards. BioWell uses licensed compounding pharmacies and applies conservative prescribing protocols to minimise risk.
Prescription based metabolic therapy medicines are not typically associated with classic "overdose" scenarios, but exceeding prescribed doses can cause significant adverse effects including severe nausea, vomiting, and gastrointestinal distress. Prescriptions are dosed conservatively and reviewed regularly.
Dose escalation is clinician-led, based on response and tolerability. BioWell does not increase dosing on patient request. This is a clinical decision made by the treating doctor.
Monthly validity supports clinical governance. It requires review before continuation, keeps dosing appropriate to current clinical status, and prevents unmonitored use.
Muscle loss can occur with rapid weight loss, especially without resistance training and sufficient protein intake. BioWell's low dosage and specific compounded formulations assist in keeping muscle loss to a minimum, and the programme includes targeted resistance training and nutritional strategies to preserve lean mass.
Metabolic adaptation can occur with weight loss in general. BioWell manages this risk through gradual, conservative weight loss supported by resistance training and adequate nutrition.
They are not considered addictive in the way substances of dependence are. They can, however, become relied upon for appetite control, which is why BioWell's programme focuses on building sustainable habits and independent metabolic function over time.
Used correctly, they function as clinical tools to support metabolic regulation within a structured programme. BioWell's approach ensures they are never used as a standalone solution.
Yes. BioWell relies on licensed compounding pharmacies operating under regulated pharmacy practice standards in South Africa.
Medication is compounded through licensed facilities, not informal settings. Dispensing occurs against a valid doctor's prescription, per patient.
BioWell utilises logistics providers that use refrigerated, controlled delivery processes where required. Cold-chain integrity is maintained from pharmacy to patient.
Yes. Prescriptions are issued per patient, with documented clinical rationale and controlled dispensing through licensed facilities.
Prescriptions are doctor-controlled, time-bound, and reviewed through structured follow-up. Adjustments are made based on clinical review, not patient request.
BioWell operates within South African medical and pharmacy standards, with consultation-based prescribing, licensed pharmacy dispensing, and HPCSA-registered practitioners.
Yes. BioWell's clinical care is delivered by qualified, registered practitioners working within a formal medical practice framework. HPCSA registration numbers are available on the Who We Are page.
South African rules restrict direct-to-consumer advertising of compounded prescription medicines and their pricing. BioWell complies with these standards.
The consultation fee covers clinical review, assessment, and treatment planning within a formal medical practice setting.
Ongoing costs depend on the need for in person follow-up requirement, required investigations, and whether pharmacological support forms part of the plan. These are discussed during the clinical process.
BioWell and Dr GL Vosloo does not claim from medical aids directly for the services rendered. Coverage for specific services may vary by medical aid. Patients should confirm with their scheme directly.
Registration is completed through the BioWell patient portal at app.bio-well.co.za. You will be guided through creating a profile, providing your medical history, and scheduling your first consultation. The process is fully online and takes approximately 10–15 minutes.
Once registered, the clinical team reviews your intake information and confirms your first consultation appointment. You will receive a confirmation by email with details on how to join your consultation.
Consultations are booked and managed through your patient portal. If you need to reschedule, please do so as early as possible to allow the clinical team to reallocate the appointment slot. Cancellations within 24 hours may not be eligible for rescheduling without a fee.
Your personalised treatment plan and prescription details are accessible within your patient portal once your clinician has finalised them following your consultation. You will be notified when they are available.
Your patient portal includes a structured weekly check-in form. Completing this consistently allows your clinical team to track your progress between consultations and make timely adjustments where needed. Feedback submissions are reviewed by the clinical team.
You can update your contact details and certain profile information directly within your patient portal. For changes to your medical history or medications, please notify the clinical team through the platform messaging function so that your records can be updated accurately.
The patient portal includes a secure messaging feature for non-urgent clinical questions. For urgent concerns, please contact the BioWell support team directly by email at info@bio-well.co.za. Do not use the platform messaging feature in a medical emergency, call emergency services instead.
Use the "Forgot password" option on the login page to reset your credentials. If you continue to experience access issues, contact the BioWell support team at info@bio-well.co.za and include your registered email address so your account can be located.
Yes. The platform is built with patient data privacy and security as a core requirement. Data handling follows South African POPIA requirements. Clinical information is stored securely and accessed only by authorised members of your clinical team.
The BioWell patient account is personal and linked to your medical records. A trusted person may assist you in completing forms or navigating the platform, but clinical decisions, consultations, and consent remain the responsibility of the registered patient. Shared account access is not supported.
The most commonly reported side effects are gastrointestinal in nature: nausea, mild vomiting, loose stools, or reduced appetite. These are typically most noticeable during the early weeks of treatment and tend to improve as the body adjusts. Your clinician will discuss what to expect based on your specific treatment.
Mild nausea is common, particularly in the first few weeks. Eating smaller, low-fat meals, staying hydrated, and avoiding lying down immediately after eating can help. If nausea is severe, persistent, or interfering significantly with daily function, contact the BioWell clinical team through your patient portal so your dosing can be reviewed.
Contact the BioWell clinical team urgently if you experience: severe or persistent abdominal pain, signs of an allergic reaction (rash, difficulty breathing, facial swelling), severe vomiting that prevents fluid intake, or any sudden or unexpected symptoms that concern you. In a medical emergency, call emergency services (10177 or 112) immediately and do not wait for platform communication.
If you miss a weekly dose, administer it as soon as you remember, provided there are at least 48 hours before your next scheduled dose. If less than 48 hours remain, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Do not double dose. If you are unsure, contact the clinical team through your patient portal.
It is advisable to inform your clinical team before pausing or stopping your medication. Stopping treatment abruptly can affect your progress and, in some cases, requires a managed taper. Your clinician can advise on the safest approach based on where you are in the programme.
In most cases, gastrointestinal side effects reduce significantly after the first two to four weeks as the body adjusts to the medication. If side effects persist beyond this period, are worsening, or are significantly affecting your quality of life, notify your clinical team for a dosing review.
Stop taking the medication and contact the BioWell clinical team immediately through your patient portal or by email at info@bio-well.co.za. If the reaction is severe or involves breathing difficulties, facial swelling, or loss of consciousness, seek emergency medical care immediately.
Always inform the BioWell clinical team of any new medication, supplement, or over-the-counter product you start during the programme. Drug interactions can affect both safety and treatment effectiveness. Your prescribing doctor reviews known interactions at the outset, but your medicine list should be kept up to date throughout the programme.
Delivery timelines depend on the compounding pharmacy and your location. Standard delivery is typically within 3–5 business days from the time the prescription is issued and confirmed by the pharmacy. You will receive communication from the pharmacy once your order is dispatched.
Medication is packaged discreetly and, where cold-chain requirements apply, shipped with appropriate temperature-controlled packaging to maintain integrity during transit. Follow any storage instructions included with your delivery.
Do not use medication that appears damaged, discoloured, or improperly sealed. Contact the BioWell support team at info@bio-well.co.za immediately with a description and, if possible, photographs of the packaging and product. Do not discard the medication until advised, it may be needed for the pharmacy's quality process.
If your medication has not arrived within the expected delivery window, contact the BioWell support team at info@bio-well.co.za. Include your name and the date your prescription was issued. We will liaise with the pharmacy and logistics provider on your behalf.
Storage requirements vary by formulation. Specific storage instructions are included with your medication from the pharmacy. Generally, compounded injectable medicines should be kept refrigerated (2–8°C) and protected from light. Do not freeze unless specifically instructed. Keep out of reach of children.
Collection from the compounding pharmacy may be available depending on the pharmacy and your location. This is not always possible for all patients or locations. Contact the BioWell support team to confirm whether in-person collection is an option for your specific prescription and pharmacy.
Reorders are linked to your active prescription and clinical review cycle. Your prescription is valid for one month, after which your clinical team must review your progress before issuing a renewal. You will be prompted through the platform to complete your monthly check-in and book your follow-up consultation in good time to avoid delays.
Medication cannot be dispensed against an expired prescription. If your follow-up is delayed, contact the BioWell clinical team as early as possible through your patient portal. The team will prioritise your review where a gap in treatment would affect your progress or health.
